Then...And Now

I am back from the Keys. What a difference a day (and 1,500 miles) makes!
I left this:

And came home to this:

I could not believe the snowstorm I'd been waiting for all winter happened while I was away. I didn't get my "snow day" off from work to enjoy it happening from home, but I sure was glad I was where I was.
I had a great time, just beaching, relaxing, shopping, dining, and knitting. The weather was sunny most of the time, but cooler on the last two days than I'd have liked. I did not get to go into the ocean because it was a little too windy and the water was kind of chilly and murky from the turtle grass, but I did have my feet in the water. I'm going back in May (hopefully) when the weather will probably be too warm!

I'll try to get more pictures up over the weekend, but I'll leave you with a "Saturday Sky" picture from last week, taken at the Westin Pier at Sunset during Dominique's Cat Show. I love watching those cats preform, and try to get there each time I visit to hear Dominique's immortal words "hurry up, take your time..."

Life is Good.

I've had a really wonderful time. Canyon Ranch and Tucson is exactly as my mind remembered it, and I still had that "I need to BE here" feeling. What is it about this area that just calls to me? I've always thought of the beach as my home....
Well, I have 2 hours until I'm picked up for the short ride to the airport, and then the cross-country red-eye flight back to reality. I'm taking home some more good memories. Until next time....

Saturday Sky for Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day weekend is called "the unofficial start of summer." And by the traffic today, people are gearing up for a good one. The weather forecast is pretty decent for this year, there have been some gloomy cold ones, and unbearably humid ones as well. Today, it was partly sunny and a little cool, with temps around 70. This is the sky from this afternoon.

It looks like my trip to Tucson is going to happen on Monday after all, and I am really looking forward to seeing the landscape out there again. I spoke with Tamar this afternoon, she's home and ready to go back already. It's her escape from reality, and I am more than happy to escape with her. And perhaps at Canyon Ranch, I can talk to someone about my feelings towards my old life vs. this new one. Get a different perspective, maybe. Ah, but I have lots to do before Monday! It is funny...since I started knitting, when I am planning a trip the first thing I think of right away is not what clothes I will take, but what knitting projects will come along. I am still working on the tank top, it's not even in the home stretch, but I still am going to persevere. My neighbors are having a party tomorrow, and I accepted the invite even before I knew I was going away. I really have a lot to do, besides knit, (like pack!) I think they'd think I was nuts if I said I can't come over, I have to finish knitting this tank top...and then pack ;-) But, they are busily readying their place right now for the party (our back yards face each other) and I can see them being worker-bees through the fence. So, I will do the neighborly thing and go over for a little while and be sociable. Then scoot home and get ready for Arizona. This might be the last post until after I get back. I hope you all enjoy your weekend, and have a great next week. XOXO

This Week's Knitting..and a Little Trip.

There has been a little knitting happening here.
I knitted two hats for Warm Woolies . They were fast and easy, good projects to knit while chatting with people at knitting group, or watching a TV show that requires more than a passing glance.
I gave Tamar her birthday present, the tank top I showed last week or so. She really liked it, and it fit her perfectly, even with "the girls', as they are. I lucked out in my guestimates.
I've also been working on a super secret project, which I can't show more than this:
It's 2/3 finished, hopefully I can finish knitting and get it blocked and out in the mail by the weekend.

I've also made some progess on my tank top. So after this post, I better get knitting! I really would also like to have this finished by next weekend...because I would like to be able to wear it sometime during the following week, even though it's not really "tank top" weather here yet, I am going to Tucson AZ! Next Monday, I'm going to Canyon Ranch Spa. Tamar asked me to go along with her (even before I gave her the b-day gift, LOL). She bought a little casita there last year, and goes often. I've been twice before, in my "old life", so this time will be a little different, but I will manage. My soul needs the desert mountain views. Of course I've been thinking of what knitting projects to bring, the temps are going to be in the 90's. (hush Mary, you're used to it by now, I am sure). I think I will bring my seasilk and start the Montego Bay scarf from Interweave Knits. The description of the project says its a perfect vacation knit, with the sea scented yarn. Sea scented? I wonder if there is any Cactus scented yarn? heh heh.
I hope you all had a nice weekend, and a good week coming up. I will be busy at work getting ready for the following week away from it. Good thing I'm going with my boss, so I don't have to be so connected to work.

FL Keys Vacation Part 1

**1/15--edit: I was able to add some pictures, finally...scroll down to see if curious. I'll work on pulling some others out of the laptop tonite**

Before tomorrow comes and I go back to hell work, I thought I'd best get this blogged. It hardly seems as if I were away. If it weren't for the pictures and the little bit of color on my skin I'd have thought it was a very good dream. These posts will be a little long, so read if you want, or scroll for the pictures. Enjoy

*blogger is being a pain in the ass and doesn't like my pictures...so they will come sporadically.
Where to begin?...hmmm...well. Even though I had the best of intentions, there wasn't much knitting done on this vacation. I was working on branching out while waiting to board the plane in Newark, and a few women said how nice it was, and shared their own knitting stories. While on the plane waiting for take off, one of the flight attendants admired the color. Honestly, I did more tinking than knitting on it, but it made the flight go fast. We picked up our rental car in Ft. Lauderdale, and were quite excited to get a brand new Chrysler Sebring hardtop convertible. It was a really nice car, a pretty bright blue, with only 60 miles on it! We had to put the top up for the ride down to the Keys, because I don't like being on the FL turnpike at 70+ topless, plus there were scattered showers. We discovered that the luggage had to be "just so" in the trunk or the top wouldn't go down (or up). So, with some rearranging and with some more luggage put in the back seat, we were off. The ride down was great, even though there were showers on and off. We actually saw a double rainbow in the Key *Largo, but of course my camera was in my luggage. Hopefully, a sign of a good vacation to be had.
We stopped for dinner in Marathon, and made it down to my friend Kathy's on Big Pine Key at around 8pm. I had the Christmas presents for Kathy with me, so I gave them to her right away. The first was a market bag that Mary had made crocheted for me. I knew Kathy would like it, because she is "green". Next was the shawl I'd finished this early last summer, but didn't put fringe on because I wanted Kathy to choose fringe or not. She chose fringe, and I said I'd put it on during the week. So, we all chatted and drank wine and caught up with each other, it had been 2 years since we saw them. Kathy and George have a new kitty, Pookie, who's really cute, but quite shy. It took her a while to warm up to us. For me, I think she was afraid of my cane. I didn't get a picture, but she's a tabby, with a lot of white on her.

Saturday, we went down to Key West for lunch, sunset, and dinner. I posted the drive and sunset pictures last Saturday. Lunch was at Mangoes on Duval Street, where we like to people watch. It gets mixed reviews. It was good this time, especially the Mango Martinis. After lunch, we drove around Key West waiting for sunset. There were 2 huge cruise ships in, and they left before the sun went down. It's an agreement, they must leave the port before sunset. I already showed a picture of the sunset last week, but just for interest, here is another. We had made dinner reservations at Michael's and got there early and had some cocktails at the bar. I had a key lime pie martini, which was very good. Good enough to have another. :-) Dinner, although good, was much pricier than when I was there last, and not worth the increase. I'm in the business, I know costs. Their costs were not just. Oh well, at least the food was good, and the drinks, better. :-)

On the drive back to Big Pine, I saw one of the things that makes me love the keys...the night sky! Due to little or no light pollution, the sky, on a clear night, is full of stars...it seems as if there are layers of stars. If it were warmer, I would have asked to the top down to watch. I knew that would happen on one of the nights, I was sure.
Sunday was a lazy day. I put the fringe on Kathy's shawl, and it looked quite nice with the fringe. I didn't get a picture, I forgot! I also knitted her up a quick dishcloth. I'd given her a set to match her kitchen last Christmas, but she doesn't use them, she has them out on display because she doesn't want to ruin them! This one, I knitted in colors not matching so she would. We went in the hot tub for a while, then got ready to go out to dinner. This time, we went to Mangrove Mama's on Sugarloaf Key. I've been there many times, it's another restaurant that sometimes is on, and sometimes it's off. That night it was on, and we had a good time. That night it was early to bed, because the next day, Monday, was my birthday!

Leaving on a Jet Plane...

...tomorrow (Friday) morning, finally. Suitcases are out, clothes are layed out (to hopefully be whittled down to a reasonable pile when I put them in the suitcase tonite.) Reggae is eyeing them with disdain. Laptop is packed so I can check email blog do some work remotely, camera (and USB cord) are packed. Knitting projects were chosen with care: I'm bringing Branching Out and some cotton for dishcloths for warm weather outdoor knitting, and some alpaca to start another Delite hat. I'm ready, although anxious about getting around the airport with my issues, but I am looking forward to getting away...to be there! If I can, I will post while there. Getting ready to go has taken up some time, along with trying to kill this cold I have, so I haven't visited as many blogs as I would have liked. Apologies! I'll be
back to regular schedule after the 11th. Have a good next week!

First Things First

Now that the week is over, it's about time I wrote about last weekend's trip. We went to Rehoboth DE and Ocean City MD. Not exactly as far south as I want to go (Key West) and the wrong direction for Maine. But...it was a get away, at least, and it was fun. Left early Friday morning and met up with friends in Rehoboth for a late lunch at what's become a yearly tradition for us at the Iguana Grill. Then we did some shopping. Unfortunately, (for me, not the others)the LYS in Rehoboth, Knitty Gritty, was closed and I didn't get to stop in. I'd heard mixed reviews but I wanted to see for myself. Oh well, Monday, I thought, I could hit it on the way back. I wanted to visit another LYS in Bethany Beach, Sea Needles, on the way back also, because this day was quickly going by and we had to get to Ocean City. Did I mention the weather was gorgeous that whole weekend? It was lovely. Temps in the 80's...Friday was humid, but the rest of the weekend, just perfect. By the time we got to the hotel we didn't want to do much but relax, listen to the band on the hotel deck and drink. I'd like to comment, now, that I am not enamoured of establishments planting palm trees if they're in a location that they won't over winter. It's just wrong. Many places do it up here too. But, it seems that everyone wants to be in the warmer latitudes but often can't. So...that being said...this is what I saw when I looked up from my lounge chair Friday night at the hotel bar. After the band was finished at the hotel, we went over to Fager's Island to hear another band and have more drinks. Notice the theme? :-)
Good thing OCMD offers public transportation for a couple bucks, affectionately known as the "drunk bus" to keep the roads safe from those of us who've partied too hard. Riding the "drunk bus" is entertainment in itself. It was very late by the time we got back to the hotel.
Saturday morning we all met for a late breakfast at one of my favorites down there, The Bayside Skillet. The food has always been great, and the portions generous. They encourage sharing. Here's some of our grub and grog.
That cocktail on the right? That was mine. Grand Mimosa. mmmmmm....
After stuffing ourselves, we went back to the hotel to get ready for the afternoon. We went to Seacrets. The place is huge. My ankle doesn't allow me much freedom to take advantage of some things there, like the floats in the water, but it was fun anyway. Spent the afternoon listening to the bands and partying, and then finding a bunch of empty lounge chairs to relax the rest of the afternoon away. The following pics are from Seacrets, and just happen to be the Saturday Sky. I kept singing..."Sitting on the Dock of the Bay."

We were at Seacrets for about 12 hours, so there wasn't much energy to do much else but go to bed.
We had decided to stay and extra day and leave on Monday instead of Sunday as we'd done in the past, so a whole day to do anything we wanted lay ahead. It was a glorious day. We shopped...walked on the boardwalk (slowly for me and stopping to rest) and had a late dinner and cocktails at Harpoon Hannah's on Fenwick Island. We ended the day there having cocktails and listening to the guitarist at their tiki bar.

Monday it was time to pack up and leave. On the way back, I got to stop at Sea Needles for some stash enhancement. The shop had some really really nice yarn, some of which came home with me. :-) My friends didn't believe there is yarn made out of bamboo, even when they saw it for themselves. I got some other yarn too...more on that later. The shop was nice, and the shop owner was too. Then, it was back to Rehoboth for more shopping, sitting on the boardwalk (me) and walking on the beach (the others) and an early dinner at the Purple Parrot Grill. Just as we were about to leave, the skies opened up and it poured for about a 1/2 hour. I never made it to Knitty Gritty, it was closed again. The link isn't working to it's website now, I wonder if it's closed for good? Anyway...it was time to head back home. It was really a nice weekend away. Then it was back to reality and the rat race at work on Tuesday.
